Catherine Aitken

Handbag designer

Bespoke bag virtuoso Catherine Aitken has a background in producing feature films and TV drama. The seeds of her second career were sown when she designed handbags to promote a film she was financing at the Cannes Film Festival. Sadly the film didn't fly but (happily for bag fans) the new line of business did, and in 2012 she gave up producing to concentrate on her own label.

Since then business has boomed. Catherine's designs retail in stores throughout the UK, Europe and the US and each season brings new additions to the collection. She has shown her work in London, New York and Los Angeles, and produced a collection for the National Galleries of Scotland to celebrate their Titian exhibition.

Unsurprisingly, her inspiration springs from the cinema screen. Think of the tailored designs by Edith Head (Hitchcock's legendary costume designer) and the classic wardrobe of Doris Day. Or the tweedy loveliness of Lauren Bacall in films like To Have And Have Not and Margaret Rutherford’s eccentric tailored combinations in Murder at the Gallop!

Whilst she occasionally dips her toe back into the producing world, Catherine’s in her element generating new designs and working closely with clients to create bespoke handbags and manbags that showcase the best of Scottish materials.
