Olive Pearl Dish

by Mastro Di Legno

The Pearl Dish, a striking solution to the challenges many of us face with technological boundaries

The Pearl Dish is a handcrafted object in the heart of your home or workspace.

The Pearl Dish is inspired by the story of a girl named Pearl, who wouldn’t put down her phone. Wanting to take a step back from technology, her parents came up with the idea of a designated place to house it during family time. This story resonated with Gillian Scott, founder of Craft Design House, and led her to design The Pearl Dish, a striking solution to the challenges many of us face with technological boundaries.

The Pearl Dish gives us a place to round up, park or put a lid on our technology and creates the space we need to listen and converse, away from its glare and interruption. It is designed to encourage face-to-face interaction as a conduit to conversation and as a talking point in itself.

Craft Design House has commissioned designers and makers across a variety of disciplines to interpret The Pearl Dish in their own materials and style. This Pearl Dish has been designed and created by Mastro Di Legno in the hilly landscape of Umbria, from the olive trees that grow there.

Mastro particularly likes Olive wood because it is hard, full of character and astonishingly light to hold. This piece is a one-off, a little piece of Italy for your home.

Wood Turner

In 1982 I was working as an apprentice to an antique furniture restorer, my intended trade, and for some time my main source of income. One day, while out walking in the Alps, I stumbled upon an old farmer. He showed me how to create beautiful ladles and bowls from a log of wood, using just a roncola and a special curved knife. It was love at first sight and I cut back on my restoration projects to experiment and adapt both the tools and the forms I could create to realise my own taste. I then began selling some of my fine wooden bowls and cutlery in the market. Having learnt the basic tenets of woodworking, I went on to hone my skills in what has become my passion, learning the secrets little by little, my work evolving as I continue in my pursuit for perfection.

In 1996 I moved to the Umbrian hills and left behind my work in furniture restoration to dedicate myself fully to working on my farm and my passion for wood craftsmanship. I particularly like to use the wood of olive trees; they are so hard and full of character. I still make bowls and spoons of all shapes and sizes but also platters and vessels utilising a wide variety of techniques and many tools.
