Hobo Handbag – Classic Grey Herringbone

by Catherine Aitken

Bag lovers of the world, meet the Hobo.

This covetable handbag has a cool take-anywhere style that works just as well in the office as out to lunch. Hobo is robust, versatile enough to complement any outfit and a great shape – the wide leather strap sits comfortably on your shoulder, keeping the bag snug underarm.

It’s finished in iconic Harris Tweed, handwoven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in a classic grey herringbone pattern. This naturally oily cloth was originally made to cope with the quirks of the Scottish climate but Catherine also adds a waterproof interlayer to each bag, so you can rest assured all your belongings are safe inside whatever the weather!

The bag base is made from black Scottish deerskin leather and the handle and zip pulls come in natural veg tan leather in black. Hobo has strong nickel fittings, including the feet on the base, and the double zip pockets on the front are perfect for stashing your mobile, keys, sweeties and more.

Inside it’s fully lined in lined in natural Scottish linen and has a double slot pocket, trimmed with lace. It’s all kept secure by a zip across the top.

All of Catherine’s stylish handbags and man bags are fondly handmade in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Handbag designer

Bespoke bag virtuoso Catherine Aitken has a background in producing feature films and TV drama. The seeds of her second career were sown when she designed handbags to promote a film she was financing at the Cannes Film Festival. Sadly the film didn't fly but (happily for bag fans) the new line of business did, and in 2012 she gave up producing to concentrate on her own label.

Since then business has boomed. Catherine's designs retail in stores throughout the UK, Europe and the US and each season brings new additions to the collection. She has shown her work in London, New York and Los Angeles, and produced a collection for the National Galleries of Scotland to celebrate their Titian exhibition.

Unsurprisingly, her inspiration springs from the cinema screen. Think of the tailored designs by Edith Head (Hitchcock's legendary costume designer) and the classic wardrobe of Doris Day. Or the tweedy loveliness of Lauren Bacall in films like To Have And Have Not and Margaret Rutherford’s eccentric tailored combinations in Murder at the Gallop!

Whilst she occasionally dips her toe back into the producing world, Catherine’s in her element generating new designs and working closely with clients to create bespoke handbags and manbags that showcase the best of Scottish materials.
