Explorer Messenger Bag – Montage

by Catherine Aitken

The clue’s in the name. This wonderful bag will take you absolutely anywhere.

The Explorer is covered with a striking graphic montage of Harris Tweeds, a fabric originally designed to protect the wearer from wild winds and rain in the Scottish Highlands. So with this on your bag you’re good to go in any weather.

It’s constructed using a colourful mix of Harris Tweeds teamed with dry waxed cotton in a rich chocolate brown, which is produced especially for Catherine in Dundee in eastern central Scotland.

This sturdy messenger has two deep pouch pockets on the reverse and is fully lined with a double slot pocket inside. On the outer layer you’ll find a strong zip closure, brass fittings and a fully adjustable strap in heavy cotton brown webbing.

We think it’s the kind of thing you buy as a gift for someone else, then find it impossible to part with. Better get two, just to be on the safe side.

Catherine Aitken

Handbag designer

Bespoke bag virtuoso Catherine Aitken has a background in producing feature films and TV drama. The seeds of her second career were sown when she designed handbags to promote a film she was financing at the Cannes Film Festival. Sadly the film didn't fly but (happily for bag fans) the new line of business did, and in 2012 she gave up producing to concentrate on her own label.

Since then business has boomed. Catherine's designs retail in stores throughout the UK, Europe and the US and each season brings new additions to the collection. She has shown her work in London, New York and Los Angeles, and produced a collection for the National Galleries of Scotland to celebrate their Titian exhibition.

Unsurprisingly, her inspiration springs from the cinema screen. Think of the tailored designs by Edith Head (Hitchcock's legendary costume designer) and the classic wardrobe of Doris Day. Or the tweedy loveliness of Lauren Bacall in films like To Have And Have Not and Margaret Rutherford’s eccentric tailored combinations in Murder at the Gallop!

Whilst she occasionally dips her toe back into the producing world, Catherine’s in her element generating new designs and working closely with clients to create bespoke handbags and manbags that showcase the best of Scottish materials.
