Maria Sigma | Woven TextilesWoven Textile Designer
Maria Sigma | Woven Textiles is an award-winning London based textile brand specialising in hand-weaving.
Our concept of textiles and production ethic reflect our dedication to Zero Waste design. We strive to reduce to the minimum yarn waste and unnecessary cuts, carbon footprints, the use of machinery, water and electric energy. By adhering to a Zero Waste philosophy, we aspire to make hand-weaving an even more sustainable craft. We exclusively use natural, non-toxic, materials and undyed, or naturally dyed, wool. We consider our environmental impact at every stage of the design and making process, as well as within our daily work environment and studio space. By emphasising on materials and texture, and removing any superfluous elements, our work pays close attention to usability and aims at producing high-quality interior products designed to become timeless heirlooms.
Through a constructive, and continuous, dialogue with traditional craft techniques, our work aims at creating vibrant, but minimal, textiles that creatively interpret long-established techniques and styles yielding a vigorously contemporary and environmentally sustainable interlocutor.
'Weaving is my way of putting the everyday chaos in order and make something honest and beautiful out of it. My approach to design is based on the idea of creating beautiful functional textiles and objects through 'zero waste' design and craftsmanship by re-interpreting traditional craft techniques in a lively and contemporary way.'
High-quality and sustainable natural fibres (British wool) are key to the philosophy of our work, in which the aspiration for textile longevity through simplicity and sensibility is essential. By emphasizing on materials and texture, and removing any superfluous elements, my work pays close attention to usability and aiming at producing high-quality interior products designed to become timeless heirlooms.
We strongly believe that the importance of weaving must be highlighted, as it is constantly present, yet often left unnoticed. Fabrics reside in the everyday and inhabit almost every corner of a household; they create a boundary between us and nature, the culture of the body and the external world. They contribute in creating a sense of something familiar and beloved.
Our textiles are made exclusively with natural undyed pure new wool and/or sustainably non-toxic dyed yarns of the highest quality, sourced from local British farmers. Wool is our material of choice because of its excellent qualities. A natural insulator, multi-climatic, easy care and long-life, non-allergic and flame & odour resistant material, is also renewable and biodegradable, which makes it the ideal raw-material for our human and environment friendly textiles.
By choosing wool you're already obtaining a product made from a renewable source, that's naturally durable and requires less chemical cleaning than other fibres and when it comes to the end of its long and useful life it is completely biodegradable.
